Handwritten accounts, mathematical calculations, drafts of letters or practice letters, pencil sketches, and lists of births and deaths. Accounts were probably kept by William H. Snediker, a Beaufort, South Carolina carpenter, or by Paul Somes (or Sams). Accounts include the names of clients such as Barnwell, Blythewood, and Fuller families, the Beaufort (S.C.) Bath House, Joseph T. Bennett, the Episcopal Church [Beaufort?, S.C.], the "Combee" (Combahee) [Episcopal] Church, Charles Morgan, Joseph T. Pope, H.H. Stewart, Beaufort (S.C.) schools, and the Harmony Lodge [Beaufort?, S.C.]. The accounts contain charges for a wide variety of services including repairing a [cotton] gin, shingling, painting, glazing windows, building houses, moving a house and privy, increasing the width of the counter at the post office, making coffins, and making a bookcase. Listed are the prices of materials (lumber, nails, and other goods) and the names of workers, amount of time spent by each worker, and wages they received. Mathematical calculations are scattered throughout the volume and are probably from several time periods. Also contained in the volume are drafts of letters or letters copied for writing practice (1864, 1866, 1867), awkward pencil drawings which cover some of the accounts, and lists (1878-1934) of births and deaths for the Johnson and Shepherd families.
